Year 1

Curriculum Coverage

Language + Questioning = Communication

These three words sit at the heart of our curriculum.

Children need to have:

  • a good grasp of language
  • be able to question and reason

As a school we use Talk for Writing skills to help develop pupils retelling and language skills. The aims of this is that, if we can talk the story and act out the story, we can write the story.

Autumn Term - Reading Stimulus

This term we are using a range of books to help us develop our reading and writing skills in English. We will use the books:

We have started to read ' Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. Baby Bear finds a rocket, makes friends with an owl and has a picnic on the moon.

A traditional fairy tale, 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and to finish the term reading 'The Christmas Story'.

Spring Term Stimulus

Year 1 will have daily Read Write Inc sessions which includes speed sounds, spelling, letter formation and a book to read which is fully decodable. The children will also have a English session which uses a book or books as a stimulus for their writing. Year 1 are focusing on writing a sentence independently and being able to recall the events in  a story.

We are going to read 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see?', 'Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What do you hear?' and  'The Ten Little Pirates' to help with our sequencing skills. We will also be reading a traditional fairy tale 'Little Red Riding Hood' to develop our re-telling skills.

Summer Term Stimulus

This term we are using 'The March of the Penguins' as it links to work in Geography. We will also be using 'Jack and the Beanstalk'  as it links to our Science work on plants and 'The Gingerbread man'. Over the term we will be developing our use of adjectives and sequencing skills. We will also look at how we use a dictionary.
