Language + Questioning = Communication
These three words sit at the heart of our curriculum.
Children need to have:
- a good grasp of language
- be able to question and reason
As a school we use Talk for Writing skills to help develop pupils retelling and language skills. The aims of this is that, if we can talk the story and act out the story, we can write the story.
Autumn term - Reading Stimulus
Year 2 will be reading a range of books by Tom Percival. This includes Ruby's Worry;Ruby loves being Ruby. Until, one day, she finds a worry. At first it's not such a big worry, and that's all right, but then it starts to grow. It gets bigger and bigger every day and it makes Ruby sad. How can Ruby get rid of it and feel like herself again?
Year 2 will be reading a range of books by Mairi Hedderwick about a girl called Katie Morag. Katie Morag lives on the island of Sturay. Whether she's posting parcels to the wrong addresses, helping Grannie Island with a winning sheep, having problems with a troublesome ted or dealing with her naughty big boy cousins, Katie Morag is always up to something.
We are also using a range of books by the author Julia Donaldson. These include ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room on a Broom. These books all contain memorable rhymes and contain animals.
Spring Term Reading Stimulus
We are continuing to study books by Julia Donaldson including Zog, The Gruffalo, Superworm and the Smartest Giant in Town. We will be looking at what is similar and different about these stories all from the same author. Can you identify any similarities or differences just by looking at the front covers of these books? They will also look at 'How to grow a plant' which links to their Science work.
Summer Term Reading Stimulus
The Tear Thief by Carol Ann Duffy - Each night, in the hours between supper and bedtime, the tear thief carries her waterproof, silvery sack over her shoulder as she soundlessly steals the tears of every child who cries. But what does she do with all of those tears?
The Lost Happy Endings by Carol Ann Duffy - When a wicked witch devises a plan to steal all the happy endings to bedtime stories, it is up to Jub--the keeper of the happy endings--to save the day and ensure sweet dreams everywhere
We will use these texts to develop our use of descriptive language and feelings.
The pupils will also read ' Rain Before Rainbow' by Smriti Halls and illustrated David Litchfield. A girl and her companion fox travel together from a place of loss and despair, through uncertain times, towards the hope of colour, light and life. Along the way, they find friends to guide and support them. Together, they build a glorious future and discover there is a way out of the darkness, into the light of the rainbow.
To finish the term they will use the book ' The Great Fire of London' which links to their History topic.
